Reasons | Aspirations | Diversity
Everyone probably aspires for something, and so did I when I applied for the Netherlands — Asia Honours Summer School (NAHSS). I was born and raised in the West and due to various personal and legal cases, I was unable to explore the culture and beauty of my parents’ motherland.
My parents are from China which is fortunately also the main destination of NAHSS — as two of its destinations were in China with the other two in Hong Kong and Taiwan. Its programme offered an opportunity for me to gain knowledge about the Chinese culture and practices through actual experience, so I thought it was an opportunity I had to seize.
I was fortunate to be selected as one of the participants for the NAHSS’ 2016 program, as well as grateful for being able to experience China’s prestigious Peking University and for meeting participants that have become lifelong friends.
As I wanted to become more knowledgeable about the country itself, I choose to study Chinese politics and culture in order to gain the formal and informal understanding. China’s governance is probably a one-of-a-kind and being able to grasp bit by bit could one day lead to an opportunity. Aside from academics, NAHSS organises visits to Huawei, Philips, Lenovo, FrieslandCampina, and other multinationals to establish relationships between participants and organisations.
One of NAHSS’ merits is that it favours no-one and therefore it favours everyone, it did not matter where you are from or what you study. The only thing that mattered was who you are; this philosophy may sound dull but it was the foundation for attracting talents from engineering, philosophy, technology, history, medical, business, and so on.
This diverse composition created favourable and unfavourable situations as ideas and perspectives collided between participants. Simultaneously, it formed the catalyst for broader understanding and increased personal growth.
The programme gave me an experience that I will cherish for an eternity, and although this story is a small thing, I would like to express my gratitude through this post for NAHSS as well as encourage those who seek an adventure to apply for it.
